The South Lanarkshire town of Rutherglen lies in the City of Glasgow area of the county. In 1126 the town received its Royal Burgh status from King David I of Scotland. The most historic building in the area was Farme Castle which was granted to the father of King Robert II, Walter Stewart in the 14th Century, and survived intact until the early 1960s. In the middle of the 18th century Rutherglen Green held its own race meetings which were deemed sufficiently important to be included in the ‘Historical List of Horse Matches and races of 1764’. The meeting took place on common land on the outskirts of the town on Monday 15th October 1764 and resulted in a win for Mr Buchanan’s Oscar over his more fancied rival Sweeper. There are no records of further races being held in the town.
